Here's my theory: When we try to "create" memories, we get a scene out of "The Christmas Story" instead of what we had in mind from "It's A Wonderful Life".
Ask your kid five years from now what his fond memory of the past is, and it will be something that happened all on its own, without your intervention.
I asked my kids what was their memory of our last trip to WDW five years ago. Answer: "Sitting on a bench eating popcorn." What?! BUT...... It was a GOOD memory. Go figure.
